The second review is on the BBC article South Sudan boy who spent days hiding in a swamp, by Anne Soy, a BBC Africa health correspondent.
This article is about a young South Sedan boy who had to hide in a swamp for days to avoid death. In South Sedan there is constant fighting and many people have to flee to seek safety. This boy had to leave his brother to die and his family behind to flee as he was shot at. This is a horrible event, which is sadly more common in countries like South Sedan than most countries on the planet. The author appeals to the reader's pathos throughout this article multiple times. The concept of a little boy near-escaping death from people attacking his camp is saddening, and discussing it definitely evokes the motions of those reading the article. The author also creates urgent diction through the use of words such as "escalating", "harder", and "could get worse", which explain the severity of the situation and how action has to be taken to prevent any further damage being done to the country of South Sedan and it's people.
Anne Soy also creates an appeal to ethos by listing a statistic on the price of commodities and essential resources for the people of South Sedan, stating that their prices have inflated by over 700%, making it much more difficult for them to receive the supplies that they need to make a significant impact on the area and end conflict as well as poorer conditions. The author also uses a professional tone, one that is fitting for an article written on such a serious subject. If it were done with any other tone, especially if less serious, then people would not take her serious or respect the information provided by the article.
The author's purpose of this article was to spread awareness of the horrors going on in many of the poorer countries of the world. In this case it is South Sedan, a country that suffers from warring groups, poor health conditions, poor regions, and harsh environments. This helps people in more developed nations realize that there are still a lot of problems in several countries around the world and kind of promotes the need for people to aid in these situations. Even donating a couple dollars from a small portion of the populations of developing countries could go along way in helping.
